Stewards of the Birds
Giving children the tools to take care of life.
A program for elementary school children
A program for elementary school children
We are happy to share that the World Economic Forum selected our program as one of the 15 initiatives worldwide that are helping create BiodiverCities! That is, cities where biodiversity can thrive.
Up until a few years ago, going on a trip meant coming back with dozens of insects squashed on the windshield. Today there are fewer and fewer. Many of these insects are pollinators and are crucial to maintaining life on the planet. Others are crucial food for birds.
Children are not only inheriting this problem, but are left out of initiatives that target the recovery of pollinators and birds.
This can create in children what is now known as eco-anxiety, an emotional exhaustion that comes from watching the deterioration of Nature and feeling like they can't do anything for it.
With the right guidance, anybody can create small habitats with the power of helping native bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other species recover.
It is thanks to habitats built by people that species like the blue swallowtail butterfly have recovered. All it needed was one garden and one person willing to help it.
In Stewards of the Birds, girls and boys work directly with scientists and Indigenous experts to create a habitat in their school... in just two weeks!
Students learn how to provide all the things pollinators need to survive. They then start watching how more and more species start using the habitat.
Throughout the year, students collaborate with our conservation scientists to identify all the species benefited from this habitat.
The data collected by the kids will help research focused on the state of conservation of urban pollinators. When the data is published in scientific journals, children will be recognized for their work as citizen scientists!
This process allows elementary school children to grow up recognizing themselves as changemakers capable of helping regenerate pollinators and birds.
Indigenous peoples have a long history of protecting pollinators and birds. To give students the greatest number of tools, Stewards of the Birds is not limited to science but includes strategies that native peoples have used for thousands of years.
They will learn four values the P'urépecha people practice to take care of their community of human and non-human species.
Among many things, children learn how in Nature everything connected and how without pollinators, there are no birds. By conserving pollinators, girls and boys become guardians of the birds.
2 weeks
You will receive all the necessary material to create a 2 square meter habitat in your school. Each class will have access to our digital platform where scientists and Indigenous experts will guide the students step by step to create the habitat. You will also receive a printable teacher's manual and printable workbooks for your students.
9 months
We want children to learn science by doing science! Our team of conservation scientists and Indigenous experts will help identify all benefited species and answer any questions the students might have. The follow-up is also a unique opportunity to learn how to do scientific surveys directly from experts.
End of School year
Our team of experts celebrates the achievements of the students during the year and makes them see their important work as biocultural citizen scientists. Thus, they can grow knowing that they are changemakers and are already playing a crucial role in the conservation of pollinators and birds in our country.
The entire team involved in designed Stewards of the Birds have been or are teachers, so we understand how exhausting this work can be. Our program is here to be your ally!
You don't need to become an expert in pollinators or to look for answers to your students questions. Our team of experts is here to take on that responsibility! We will guide students step by step through our video-tutorials, and we will be answering all the questions they have throughout the entire year.
Have you ever heard that forests need maintenance to survive? Thats nonsense! Native plants are used to the soil, rain and climate of each region. This makes its maintenance infinitely easier than for example, a vegetable garden.
We care about your students! In order to offer the best possible follow-up, our team of conservation scientists can only serve a limited number of schools.
Don't miss out!
We have payment plans.
